Business video is an exciting adventure that most companies want to implement in their marketing strategy. But, most professionals within the company do not know where to start when it comes to implementing video production. I have compiled a brief list of resources to help jump start your journey and hopefully eliminate the anxiety of business video.

The production side of video is not as hard as you think. Most people think it takes fancy cameras and a large budget to create professional looking video. Not so fast my friend! Check out a previous blog entry I created for different uses for video.

You most likely walk around with an incredible camera in you pocket or purse everyday… your smart phone. The iPhone or any other smart phone(s) have unbelievable video capability. The phone you most likely use everyday even films at 4k resolution – which is four times the resolution of 1080HD footage. If you have a little money to invest in a new camera – I would suggest looking at a DSLR camera (Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc.) to record business video.

Outside of the camera – I have three keys to help boost your business video quality.

1. Audio

Most people watching will forgive video quality look but nobody wants to struggle to listen to bad audio. Step up your audio connection into the camera with a lavalier mic or a boom mic. Both of the mic suggestions will help amplify solid audio into your video.

2. Lighting

You will find a few options when it comes to light – “free” also known as the Sun or purchase controlled lights. I would recommend if filming outside to schedule your video at the “Golden Hour” which is right after dusk or right before dawn. The golden hour has a very soft light that is flattering to subject in the video.

If you have a home studio or office space to shoot video – I would recommend purchasing a lighting kit. The different lighting kits will give you the ability to control the light on your subject. Most business video follows the three point lighting setup as shown in the graphic below.

3. Preparation

As the old Benjamin Franklin saying goes, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” One of the biggest time savers in the business video will be preparation. I would suggest finalizing your shot ideas and talking points well in advance to the video shoot.
